It's Written in the Stars

On Tuesday night, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Cancer forms a square with the Libra Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon on 19 June is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

Mid Winter with the Wild Hunt

Yule Log (by Cathy)
With clouds hanging low in the sky, gently gracing the hills of Mt Crawford forest, teasing us with a peak every now and then of what was beyond the misty veils of the Bone Mother, we could not have asked for a more perfect scene setting for this year's Wild Hunt Mid Winter magickal retreat, where we ventured between the worlds.

A brief overview of the Wild Hunt as it appeared with the various mythologies was given, followed by lunch and presentations of two Gods associated who were also associated with this time of the year.  As the mists briefly departed, we were enticed to wander through the forest, which allowed me to indulge in my fascination with fungi as more interesting specimens were discovered.

Welcoming back the Child of Promise

As the Wheel of the Year turns, we find ourselves now at the Winter Solstice.  The sun is at its northern most point during its yearly migration across the sky which means that whilst the Northern Hemisphere is basking in its warmth, for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere, the warming rays are a distant memory.

It is with this longing that we create our rituals that focus around the return of the Child of Promise, the Invincible Sun, or as it was known to the Romans, the Sol Invicus, the Unconquerable Sun.

Journeying with the Tarot (again)

It has been many years since I last read tarot professionally, in fact I think I actually packed away that particular deck back in 1999.  Since that time, I have acquired a number of other decks as well as oracle cards (my favourite of which being the Goddess Oracle that features the beautiful artwork of Hrana Janto) and while I still read for myself, for some reason I never felt the drive to read for others ... that is until now.

Understanding a Food Blessing

Within the tradition that I follow and teach, part of specific rituals include the sharing of food and drink with those who have joined us in a circle.  Prior to this sharing, the food and drink is blessed, and portion of which is set aside for libation.

The word "libation" has been described as being "... a ritual pouring of a liquid as an offering to a god or spirit or in memory of those who have died."  Or even "an act or instance of drinking often ceremoniously."

Balancing Priorities

A long weekend has come and gone, resulting in feelings of it simply not being long enough.  Then again, yes, I did manage to achieve all that I had set out to do.

The masks for the Temple of the Dark Moon's upcoming mid Winter magickal retreat have been finished, and the sacred anointing oil is now brewing.  There is certainly an air of excitement about this year's retreat, as if the recent cold snap we have been having of late, it has awoken some sleeping primal force that will be waiting for our arrival.

In the Moon's Light

The following posting was made a few years agon on my old blog and as due to the lunar theme, I thought I would repeat it here.

The excerpt is from Spirit of the Witch: Religion & Spirituality in Contemporary Witchcraft by Raven Grimassi, which is described as being "an one-of-a-kind guidebook" in which Raven Grimassi "presents an insightful portrait of the spirit of the Witch. He explores the spiritual element of the rituals, practices, and beliefs of Witchcraft, and how these elements apply not only to the seasons of nature, but also to the mystical seasons of the soul".

Under the Lunar Light

Dodging raindrops on Monday evening, we gathered under the glorious Morton Bay fig trees in the beautiful Botanic Park to participate in the third public Full Moon Gathering (esbat) that the Temple of the Dark Moon has hosted for this year.  Not only was the Moon entering the astrological sign of Sagittarius (the Sun being in Gemini), but it was also a partial lunar eclipse.

Hearing the Call of the Wild

Honouring the Horn'd God
In only three week's time the Temple's Wild Hunt magickal retreat will be happening and I am getting rather excited.  This is the third (maybe fourth) time we will be undertaking this particular themed ritual and each year, it gets better and better.

The ritual has been written and the Temple's Inner Court members are in the process of learning our lines, as well as finalising ritual costumes.  The weekend menu has been planned, that includes lunch, a two course scrumptious post-ritual feast, and hearty breakfast the following morning.  What I love about the food we offer is that it largely lovingly prepared by the  Inner Court members.  The menu is always filled with delicious homemade baking - from scones, muffins and quiches for lunch through to fresh salads, roasts and dessert.  And there is never the fear of anyone going hungry during a Temple of the Dark Moon magickal retreat.
